The A to Z of AI Accounting Software (Atozai)

The AI Accounting Software World Ranking is live

By Damon Anderson, 16 July 2026. 4 minute read.

This week we launched the AI Accounting Software Top 50 World Rankings. This is the new benchmark for evaluating and ranking global accounting software based on the breadth and depth of their AI capability.

As the barriers to entry collapse, another AI startup is born every day. An abundance of choice is great - but the cognitive overload is real and it seems that everyone has an opinion that their solution is the best.

Opinions are great - I've got a few myself - but used on their own are dangerous. This is why I decided that the world could do with a consistent way to measure the software against one another. The World Ranking benchmarks all players against each other on the same criteria, applied the same way. Not a sponsored placement. Not based on the "vibes". A single standard held up against every vendor we track.

What it measures

Every vendor on the A to Z is scored across five weighted dimensions.

AI
Capability
How mature the AI is, and whether it's core to the product
Workflow
Coverage
How much of the real accounting workflow it actually covers
Market
Signals
The level of public news coverage & reviews
Verified
Evidence
Whether the product claims stand up to evidence
Depth of
Coverage
Whether we've written about it in any depth

The measurement and weightings are fixed and applied consistently across the 356 vendors assessed. The AI capabilities claimed by a vendor require evidence. Anyone saying they have built configurable agents that can close the books autonomously has to prove it. As the requirements tighten, the scores get harder to earn and more meaningful to hold.

The rankings are published once a month. The data underneath is live. Every product release, every funding round, every capability change is reflected on the site as it happens. The leaderboard is the monthly snapshot of a picture that moves every day.

What the first edition shows

Look at the top ten and notice what is missing.

Not one household name. Purpose built AI-native general ledgers, agentic-management platforms, or close and bookkeeping automation. The companies rebuilding the accounting stack are, for the most part, names that most of the profession has not heard of yet. The tools most accountants use every day are not the tools scoring highest on genuine AI capability.

Number one: Digits

Digits lands the top spot this month, by a nose to Campfire. Who is Digits? Well, rather than give you my personal handwritten perspective, I thought I'd outsource this to our own Ask tool.

Who is Digits?
Answer
Digits is an AI-native general ledger for SME accounting, scoring top of our maturity scale. The thesis is that the ledger itself becomes an AI-first product rather than a passive record, with agents handling coding, reconciliation and close while humans review the exceptions. The credibility signal is the team: Craig Walker, co-founder of Xero, joined as Head of Product Strategy and frames Digits as doing for AI what Xero did for cloud. One caveat. Digits is US-centric today, so UK firms are largely on the outside looking in for now.

That answer came from the Ask tool, not from me. Well, not me directly, but I did train it. It's been trained by everything in the report and answers in plain language with the evidence to back it. Number one on the board, explained by the board. Lovely stuff!

One to watch: Archie

Archie landed the first World Ranking in 6th spot. Pretty remarkable when you consider it's barely landed in the market. Built by Stuart MacLeod, who previously founded Karbon, and last week confirmed in a LinkedIn post that he is opening Archie up to a select group of customers. Out of waitlist, and into beta.

It's cursor for accountants. A platform to run your practice.
— Stuart MacLeod, founder of Archie

I had a peek at Archie, and it is one of those tools that is genuinely hard to categorise, which is usually a sign that something interesting is happening. Having spent some time talking it through with Stuart, I really feel like it has a real shot at being a market differentiator rather than just another logo on a list.

Every month from here

This is the July edition of the World Rankings. August is already being scored in the background.

The board will move. Products evolve, evidence gets submitted, new companies launch, and positions change. A ranking that happens once is a stunt. A ranking that happens every month is a fixture, that helps keep all the players on the field honest.

Didn't make the Top 50?

Help us understand why. The ranking is only as accurate as the evidence behind it. Keep your profile current so your position reflects what you have actually built. Questions about how you are scored, or think we have it wrong? Get in touch. We would rather correct the record than carry a stale one.
